报告题目: An Introduction to Information Theory

报告摘要：Information theory is a branch of applied mathematics and electrical engineering involving the quantification of information. Historically, information theory was developed by Claude E. Shannon to find fundamental limits on signal processing operations such as compressing data and on reliably storing and communicating data. Since its inception it has broadened to find applications in many other areas, including statistical inference, artificial intelligence, cryptography, biology, statistical physics, quantum computing, computational complexity, data analysis and so on. This talk is to give a brief introduction to this rapidly developing theory. Some research directions in continuous-time information theory, which are intimately related to stochastic differential equations, will be mentioned as well.

报告人简介：韩光跃，现任香港大学数学系副教授，博士生导师。1997年和2000年在北京大学获得数学学士和硕士学位，2004年在美国圣母大学获得数学博士学位。之后，他在加拿大的英属哥伦比亚大学数学系作为博士后工作三年，并在2007年作为助理教授加入香港大学数学系。他的主要研究领域是信息论、编码论和组合数学。
